Another Plant Closes Doors

ELKHART -- Sundowner Trailers Inc. has notified the state it will close its facility on C.R. 6 in October and lay off 80 workers.

The closure is part of Sundowner's consolidation of the local plant into the main facility in Coleman, Okla. Company officials earlier said employees at the Elkhart plant would be offered jobs in Oklahoma.

On Wednesday, however, Jeremy Currie, human resources manager in Oklahoma, said he did not know if employees from Elkhart had been offered jobs. He referred questions about the downsizing to the general manager in Elkhart but that person was unavailable.

In a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Currie wrote that Sundowner Trailers will permanently close the Elkhart plant between Oct. 3 and Oct. 17. "This will result in the layoff of 80 employees."
